Est aut sed eaque consequatur rerum
Deciding to engage the services of a tax relief or resolution company (commonly known by the name of Tax Resolution or Tax Relief) is not something to be taken lightly. Why? Because you are always being bombarded with confusing, incorrect, false information, or useless solutions. So, how to find and select a qualified and competent professional? How do you make sure you won’t get scammed?
Start by reading this article. With this information you can make an informed and wise decision. Here are four signs that a tax resolution company is nothing more than a scam.
Sign Number One: Promises that are Miraculous or Too Good To Be True.
If someone guarantees that they can settle your tax debt for less than you owe through some program offered by the IRS, or promises you a low monthly payment of a specific amount, this should be an immediate red flag for you. In comparison, this would be similar to a person who has a serious problem with the law, for which they are going to trial, and some attorney guarantees they know exactly what the jury is going to decide. That is not possible! They don’t know and can’t know ahead of time. It is exactly the same with the IRS. In a tax problem the IRS is the ultimate arbitrator, they are the ones who have the last word. Nobody else.
A reputable company with integrity will do a comprehensive and detailed analysis of your case, even before taking you on as a client, to determine what are the best options forresolving your problem, based on experience or the history of cases like yours.
Sign Number Two: Bait and Switch
Beware of companies that quote you a low price to take you as a client, make you sign a contract, only to later inform you that additional services and, obviously, more money are needed in order to finish your case.
Some companies also charge an hourly fee and/or add fees for making copies, faxing documents, making calls or waiting on the phone with the IRS, mailing letters, etc. They charge you for every piece of paper and every minute and you won’t realize how much it’s really going to cost to get a final resolution to your problem.
A reputable firm will let you know up front, before taking you on as a client, how much you will pay to resolve your problem permanently and will explain the structure or reason for the fees.
Also, most good tax resolution companies have flat fees, so you know up front when you are going to pay to get a permanent resolution.
Sign Number Three: Salesperson vs. CPA, EA or Attorney
Always try to ask the person who wants to sell you tax relief services about their credentials or professional certifications. In the United States, generally only a CPA, Enrolled Agent (EA), or Attorney can represent a taxpayer before the IRS.
There are companies with a national presence whose focus was really on marketing and the use of aggressive sales tactics. These salespeople earn high commissions for managing to sell you a service and charge you astronomical amounts. However, many of these companies only care about selling the service and not so much solving your problem.
It is important to deal with someone who is held to a high standard of professionalism. For example, CPAs are required to maintain high standards of ethics or risk being penalized, including losing their professional licenses.
Be sure to only speak with a qualified professional about your situation and possible remedies to your problem.
Signal Number Four: Full Payment of Fees in Advance
Let’s be honest and transparent. Taxpayer representation services are not cheap. This is why it should not be taken lightly.
Beware of companies that require their full fees up front (before they start working on your case). Typically, these are large national settlement companies that are heard on the radio or TV, that charge extremely high prices and have no interest in settling your case.
A firm with integrity will not only be transparent to you with information about your options to resolve your tax situation, but will typically require a reasonable deposit to start working on your case, and will agree to fixed monthly terms that fit within your budget.
